Noble friends,
Just cataloged for the UVA libraries: EUROPEAN WARFARE, 1350-1750 edited
by Frank Tallett and D.J.B. Trim (ISBN 9780521713894; our call #
ALDERMAN U37 .E94 2010). The contributed articles to this volume offer
somewhat different look at warfare in the middle ages and beyond than
most books concerned mostly with tactics and weapons. Most articles here
are about how armies were used politically, how armies were organized,
and also how armies were used to further religious and ideological
agendas. The main thrust seems to be how warfare changed, as this was
both a time of great technical innovation, and saw the rise of nation
states and colonial empires. Two articles focus on armies of the Ottoman
Empire in Europe, and there is also a chapter on naval warfare. The text
is supported by ten maps, and four tables, but there are no images of
equipment or troops (except the paperback has a fantastic colored cover
showing the battle of Pavia in 1525), so this is not a book for the garb
and gear fans. However, there is an extensive bibliography and an index.
Kind regards,
Lord Mungo Napier, Shire of Isenfir's Unofficial Librarian
