My assistant in charge of entomological collecting brought home the
first tick of the season.
Permethrin has a good reputation for protecting against ticks and
other insects. You spray it on the cloth, saturating it. When it
dries, it lasts through about 20 washings. I do my stockings and
Venetians. I have also done it on dungarees and other clothing. My
daughter used it in Africa.
It is actually an insecticide, but is neutralized by enzymes on skin,
so you apply it to clothing. It also works on mosquitos, black flies, etc
To remove ticks pull with a sharp tweezer to try to get the head,
applying steady pressure. I have a flat metal puller I got at REI
that works well. The methods of using Vaseline or other chemicals, or
heat, are no longer recommended.
