Behlen's salad bowl finish can be found at wood working stores like Woodcraft with a significant price tag, but you can also find it on Amazon.com. You will need to recoat your item periodically, as it does wear off with use. Note that anything acidic (citrus, tomatoes, etc.) will get thru it quite rapidly also.
If what you're trying to coat is the inside of a drinking vessel, then don't plan on drinking any liquor (grain alchohol) out of it, as it will deteriorate the finish and it could leech into your beverage.
My drinking horn is coated inside with regular polyurethane. Beer, coca-cola, etc is fine, but I don't do whiskey or rum in it. It was well cured before I began to use it with the coating and it's never chipped, peeled, or anything. I only use it when I'm at events (not every-day use) so I'm really not worried about getting cancer or anything from it. I do make a concentrated effort not to leave anything sitting in it overnight, though. ;)
My wooden plates and bowls are sealed with walnut oil; when they start looking dry I simply wipe them down with another coat. I warn folks that borrow my stuff in case of nut allergies. I don't have to wait for the oil to 'cure'.
What is it that you need to coat? Is it for SCA use?
