Friends,

Here are two books which are sure to be of interest to Scadians:

ENGLAND UNDER THE NORMAN AND ANGEVIN KINGS, 1075-1225 by Robert Bartlett
(ISBN 9780199251018, our call# ALDERMAN DA195 .B28 2000). This is almost
an encyclopedia of English history and culture of this period, covering
such topics as the role of queens, crown-wearing, household troops,
naval warfare, the parish and parish priest, elementary schools, hair
and dress, drinking and swearing, and on and on for 772 pages! Thank
goodness this is a reasonably-priced paperback edition. There are eight
pages of black-and-white plates, plus various maps, diagrams and tables
scattered throughout the text. This book is a must for a serious
re-enactor of England in this period.

THE NEW MARITIME HISTORY OF DEVON, Vol. 1 (From Early Times to the Late
Eighteenth Century), edited by Michael Duffy . . . [et al.] (ISBN
0851776116, our call# ALDERMAN DA 670 .D49 N49 1992 v.1). Books about
the maritime history of the middle ages are fairly rare, and this one is
a jewel. While it covers a longer period than our interest, there is
plenty of material here that would be of interest to Atlantia's
seafarers (we still have some, don't we?). There is really useful
information here that could give great background for a character,
whether you are a ship owner, corsair, seaman, or barkeep in a shady
dive. Consider the titles of just these two chapters: "Devon
Privateering from Early Times to 1688" and "Port Towns of
Fourteenth-century Devon". The book is in large format, and well
illustrated (though all black-and-white) with photos, maps and drawings
in 256 pages.

Kind regards,

Mungo Napier, Unofficial Librarian of Isenfir
(mak Garth Groff, UVA Library cataloger)
