Hand protection is part of the armor. Baskets become necessary for hand-protection when people choose demi-gauntlets. There's plenty of contention based on other considerations about demi's vs full gaunts. Looking only at the monetary price needed to get a prospective fighter armored, full gauntlets allow someone on the field with any weapons form for the least monetary investment in protective equipment.
I'm certain we'll hear some of the complaints about full gauntlets in short order.
