[MR] The Cost to armor a New fighter?

just a few corrections.
archers (and anyone else participating in combat activities) have the same
armour requirements with the exception of hand protection (see the earl
marshals website for the rules).
archers are hit just as hard as anyone else.
street hockey gloves alone are not legal hand protection
there is no requirement for a half gauntlet on your shield hand if you use a
strapped shield.
as to the original question i would suggest searching the armourarchive for
that topic as we have had many long threads there on it and there is a lot
of good information to be had. cheaper isnt typically better and the
internet is typically a very bad place to find armour. if the armour doesnt
fit and isnt constructed correctly you are simply throwing money away. ebay
is a horrible choice by the way, horrible. covering modern materials often
costs more in both time and money than simply using appropriate material in
the first place. however, neither way is difficult to do. i suggest anyone
interested in fighting (or any form of combat archery / siege) to find a
local knight and ask them for some help in getting your gear put together.
i dont know of any in our order that wouldnt be glad to help.
as for cost i suggest most folks plan on $400 for a decent helm, the rest
can be done for $200 or less. most people spend twice that on their home
computer and about the same amount on their video game system, neither of
which will provide you as much enjoyment as sca sport combat.

Combat archers may need less armor than heavy fighters, since they are not
supposed to be struck hard. A fencer's one-piece chest protector will work
for
women, but you may want more. And you will probably want to pad it with
foam.
(Half the female fencers at our practice wear chest protectors; half,
including the Knight Marshal, feel no need). Chest plate or cuirass are
words
to search for. See also http://swordmaiden.com/

Most heavy fighters wear some sort of thigh protection, and some sort of
shoulder-upper arm protection, even though these are not required.
Women may want groin protection (it's advised), but loose skirts hanging
(see
roman armor--strips of leather) may do, and may also protect the thighs.
They
should NOT wear men's groin protectors. There are some sold for women--see a
hockey store.
Hockey gloves will have to be covered, and they are hard to cover. Moreover,
"street hockey" gloves are preferred. Some sort of vambrace may be wanted on
the weapon arm. Half-gauntlets will pass if you use a full basket-hilt guard
and full basket on your shield. In leather these may cost as much as hockey
gloves, but give less problem with "blatantly modern" at inspection.
