I hate to tell you this, but the only obvious answers here would be "because I'm either ignorant of copyright law or I'm a thief."
Copyright works like this: if you take a picture, it's yours. It's not the person's you took it of.
I can take a picture of, say, the Statue of Liberty, and copyright that picture. I didnt' make the statue, obvioiusly, but I did make the image of it. Therefore, if if that image ends up on a stock site and someone wants to use it, they pay me for it. They don't pay the government of France, even though they produced the statue.
Same goes for people's images. You don't own pictures of yourself you didn't take, even if they were taken at "an event you paid money to attend." You're in a public place, and as such don't really have any right to privacy. Granted, if the photographer is going to use those pics for a publication somewhere, the right thing for HIM to do would be to get a release signed by you to make sure you are okay with that. But you aren't releasing the picture to him, because you don't own it. You're simply giving him permission to publically publish your image. (I'm not talking about throwing them up there on Flickr, I'm talking about using them on a website or brochure or something.)
If someone wants to be paid for their work, they have every right to expect for that to be respected, especially by the SCA folks they play with. Otherwise, it's theft. There are plenty of amazing photographers in the SCA, and some charge while others do not. Respect their rights to their work, if they want to be paid. If their work is too pricey, find someone who works more cheaply or for free. But don't disrespect the artist who's work you want to use.
Also, photographers, if you don't want your work nicked...and let's face it, it happens...don't put a high res version out there. Put a low res thumbnail out there with a watermark on it. Otherwise, you have no control over it.
