Sigh.
24 yeasrs ago I was sitting in a little dark corner reading the Merry Rose off of UUNET and being totally intimidated because a conversation just ike this one was raging over the "blue eyed samuri" running around pennsic. As a black woman who had done civil waar and got really tired of having to defend my self for not wearing burlap and ashes, I would not concider jumping from one frying pan into another fire.
It took me another 3 years to attend my first event and I was waiting for someone to say something because I wor German Renn my second event.
Everybody was very welcoming...the dress wasnt half bad either..but I kept waitng for the other shoe to drop. The dress has since gone on to dress other women in the SCA as my waistline has gone on to grow out of it. I have learned a lot..including some really miserable stories about people who were dreadfully hurt by someone saying basically..how dare you represent something you couldnt possibly be....
It is the Society for Creative Anachronisms...
not Society for Commenting Acrimoniously.
No one has ever been that way to me ,personally ,but it made me believe that I would be unwelcome because if I did do middle eastern or northafrican...I would then have been ostrisized because it wasnt european. It wasnt true, but just reading this stuff trying to get the nerve to be part of this organization can be very discouraging.
Which is why I suppose, when I went to my first Pennsic,XVIIII, there were 6000 attendees and only 4 other women of color, and we regularly all got called Isabella, who didnt attend that year!
The Creative part should be obvious but sometimes it isnt.
After 20 years in the SCA, I cant believe this caca even comes up anymore....I thought it had been outgrown.

We were not there to know there were not English longbowman that were from African-american decent...I would think that if you were defending home and country that all hands would be put into service defending no matter what background is.Using the civil war as an example you had the buffalo soliders that raised arms to defend. But this isn't a racial issue yet a point that you are free to explore cultures and live them as well.If we didn't then how would we learn???
Although several African-American regiments were raised during the Civil War to fight alongside the Union Army (including the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the many United States Colored Troops Regiments), the "Buffalo Soldiers" were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiments in the regular U.S. Army.
On September 6, 2005, Mark Matthews, who was the oldest living Buffalo Soldier, died at the age of 111. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.[4]
