WHAT: Lady Gerita (Carolle Cox) will lead a workshop to make Venitian gowns, to be conducted over two sessions. This is the first session (I'm working on dates/locations for second session).
WHERE: G-Street Fabrics in the Sully Station strip mall. 5077 Westfields Blvd. , Centreville, Virginia 20120
Phone: 703-818-8090
DATE: 18 Oct 2009
TIME: 2:00 - 6:00
FIRST SESSION: Intro and overview, and hands-on for the underpinnings. We will also discuss corsets and other breast control measures. If you have books relevant to this period of time, please bring them to share.
Bring 4-5 yards hanky weight linen for the camica.
Bring 4 yards of heavy fabric like canvas or corset twill, quilt binding if desiered, boning materials (steel, plastic, reed) and grommets or hardware washers.
Bring about 5 yards for bottoms. Bring materials to make patterns (paper, muslin, or non fusible interfacing). Sewing machine and sewing supplies.
SECOND SESSION:
In a second session, we will go over the outer garment choices/combinations, and then fit for bodices where needed, learn (if necessary) pleating techniques, and get started. This is where the expense comes in. There is generally as much as 12 yards of fabric in later-period dresses. Patterns may need more to match. You’ll need that fabric, plus a yard or two of heavy lining material (canvas, corset twill…) and the same amount of lining. I bone the dress to avoid a corset, and if this op
tion is selected, they’ll need washable boning (the plastic stuff that comes on a roll at JoAnne’s is what I use most often). Heavy button thread is essential for putting the skirt onto the bodice – it’s HEAVY!
In Service,
Lady Alessandra da Venizia
Guildmistress
