no. in nc you may not use deadly force to protect property. you can, of
course, use deadly force to protect yourself or someone else which is why if
you see someone trying to enter your home you have the right to shoot them
dead since you cannot determine if they mean you harm or not. if you wake
up to a guy walking out of your home with your jewelry box you may not,
legally, use deadly force. thats why its best for the police to only hear
one side of the story if someone invades (or attempts to) your home.

The law on that varies from state to state. I'm pretty sure that NC is a
state where you are allowed to defend your property; there have been a
couple recent events where homeowners shot intruders and I think that's what
I read in the newspaper articles (ie, that no charges would be filed against
the homeowner).
