The article says the student was backed into a corner and probably struck
out of fear (a neighbor says he heard screaming), and he struck the intruder
no more than twice. The intruder "had 29 prior convictions for crimes such
as breaking and entering."

Any question on whether to prosecute the student results from the fact that
this occurred in a detached garage in the yard, not in the house. In my
opinion, defending one's property is defending one's property.
