You certainly can kill someone with a rattan stick, if you know how. As 
an MP I trained with the baton and the 36" riot stick (which are 
hardwoods, but that doesn't matter here). There were blows we were 
specifically trained NOT to strike, including end jabs to the head, 
throat or sternum. A rattan stick, an umbrella, or even a rolled 
newspaper, can deliver lethal damage with an end jab if enough force is 
behind the blow.

I suspect that this is one reason we don't allow quarter-staves in SCA 
combat.

Back to the middle-ages for me now.
