Lady Yseulte Trevelyn, this time writing as the autocrat for TTnT, October 23-25 at Camp Spencer in Street, MD (same location as last year).
You may have heard about some of the plans for the event, but here are more reasons to reserve the date on your calendar: A&S contests, including best use of Bright Hills' colors in any medium, best decorated arrow, baronial bard, a traveler's purse, and an essay contest on King Richard's fitness as a king. Please read below for more details on the contests, and email me if you have further questions.
1. Baronial Bard:
Sponsor: Lady Ingeborg i Trondheim , current Baronial Bard of Bright Hills
Who may compete:
Anyone of any age may participate in the competition for the prizes.
If you wish to be considered for Baronial Bard of Bright Hills, you must state your intention at registration.
Why: Because being a bard is fun!
THE RULES:
1) Contestants must be prepared to perform a total of 3 pieces, each piece from a different category of the following list of 5 categories. At least one of the three entries must be an original work by the contestant.
2) In the event of a tie, the bards in the tie will be required to perform a 4th piece from a category chosen by the judges.
3) Period appropriateness and ingenuity, along with an ability to be entertaining, will carry the day.
The Categories are:
1. One period song or “SCA song” with a short spoken note about its provenance.
2. One piece of Medieval music or “SCA song” played on an instrument.
3. One period poem with a short spoken note about its provenance-- (Either read or memorized).
4. One skit in Medieval style.
5. One joke or story well told.
Judging will be by Baroness Martelle and Bard Ingeborg, with a third bard TBN. And, let all who enter have fun!
2. "Treasures of Sherwood Forest" (best decorated arrow)
The reknown of the archers of Bright Hills challenges that of the famed archers of Sherwood Forest and the mighty longbowmen of England. Indeed, only the finest equipment will do!
Thus does Chagan Khulan challenge the good folk of Atlantia to bring forth their most prized arrows, painted by skilled and deft artisans, to compete for the finest arrow of Bright Hills. Competition is open to all - adult or child - and they may enter as many arrows as they wish. Please make sure the paint is dry. Arrows must be SCA legal and usable. Documentation of your arrow is welcome but not required.
Winners will be chosen by popular vote. One prize for 13 and older, one prize for under 13 years of age.
Sponsored by Chagan Khulan. After all, what Mongol wouldn't appreciate good archery equipment?
3. TTnT contest for A&S -- A Traveler’s Purse
Where would the bard Blondell keep his spare shirt and fire starter, hardtack and cheese, as he travels by horse about the countryside searching for his king, or Robin Hood with his much smaller pouch for the little things this archer needs as he goes walking through Sherwood Forest? Your interpretation in cloth or leather (or both) elaborate or plain, large or small, could win the prize. Documentation teaching us how to make your medieval purse is required. Contest sponsored by Lady Ingeborg i Trondheim , Baronial Bard.
4. "I Blame Richard...." (essay contest)
"I blame Richard..." as Robin Hood said to the king (in disguise) in the Erroll Flynn film. And on reflection, I, Szilagy Margit find I feel the same. Therefore, I propose an essay contest with a suitable prize, to anyone who can establish, to a "jury of peers" either (or both) of the following propositions, with "chapter and verse" documentation:
A. Richard the Lionheart was England's greatest king
or
B. King Richard the Lionheart was a worse king than his brother John "Lackland"
in 5,000 words of less (not counting documentation) .
