. Not many such documents written before 1300 from Scotland survive.
During the First Scottish War of Independence Edward I of England gave
orders to his officers to send any charters, grants, or other official
documents to London, or burn them if they couldn't be moved. This was to
destroy any claims by the burgesses or nobility in Scotland to their
lands or titles. Edward planned to reconfirm these such awards, but only
for the Scots who swore fealty to him. Thus the Ragman's Roll.
