also keep in mind that comfrey has been on the banned substances list for
most martial sports due to its known toxicity to the liver. any sport in
which you have to cut weight before a fight runs an elevated risk of liver
damage because of the extreme dehydration required to drop say 25 - 30
pounds in two days so substances without proven health benefits and any
substance seen as a performance enhancer makes the list. even when i was
boxing comfrey was on the list because i asked what it was way back then.
so be careful.

Comfrey= properties and uses
The plant is demulcent and slightly astringment. For merly i was somewhat
esteemedas a vulnerary but later used domestically in nasal congestion or
catarrah.
I may be boiled in water, wine,or made into a syrup, and taken in doses from
a wineglass full to a teacupful of the peparation, two or 3 times daily.
Externally the fresh root ,bruised ,forms an excellent application to
bruises,fresh wounds,etc.

info from The Herbalist Clarence Meyer (except typos those are mine)

Comfrey (symphytum officinale)\
AKA Knitbone/Bruisewort/woundwort

Comfrey has been used as a healing herb since 400 bc (so it could be
period). It was known to have the power to encourage body tissue repair. The
Greeks used it to stop heavy bleeding and treat bronchial
problems.Dioscorides ,a Greek physican of the first century ,prescribed the
plant to heal wounds and mend broken bones.
The Cherokee have used this plant internally for a number of ailments.

Much more info way to long to type.. this info from The Little Herb
Encyclopedia by Jack Ritchason ,N.D

I HIGHLY advise talking to your doctor if you are on any meds.. some herbs
do react very badly with modern meds.
