First let me say I rarely post to the list. I find that others generally cover the topic all too well. I have noticed a trend that occurs here- someone posts a legitimate question or comment and it is jumped on until the proverbial dead horse is beaten to dust. All this being said, I do feel I have something to offer on this subject of "alternative medicine".
My profession centers around healing- I work with doctors and acupuncturists. I have studied herbs and oils for many years. I have traveled to many countries to gain a better understanding of healing practices. I have shared oils and herbs with many in the SCA in a responsible manner. I do not claim to cure anything, I am not a doctor, nor do I suggest people avoid proper medical care. HOWEVER.....I am amused when I hear people state personal opinions as fact. 
Lets be clear:
 1 Alopathic (western medicine) is the NEWEST form of healing. What some call "folk" medicine has been proven effective in two ways. It has stood the test of time and it has stood the test of modern research.
2. Western medicine is great for acute care (severed limbs, heart attacks, broken bones) however it falls far short for chronic conditions. 
3. Someone asked what herbs do???? I suggest you attend one of the classes taught at University or read a book or study the subject before you state that they don't work. There are volumes of research that has been conducted and is still being conducted showing how effective herbs and oils are. For example: Oregano has a 98.9% kill rate against Staph and Strep according to a Weeber State University study. Essential Oils are being used in many hospitals worldwide.
Modern pharmaceuticals do not have to be held to the same high standard that herbs do. Annually thousands die from perscription meds compared to 0 from herbs. Which is safer? Which is more effective? Only you can decide.If you want to learn more, I humbly offer my knowledge with others. That is why I teach and display at A&S and University. I do not impose my opinion on others and ask that this art of healing not be treated disrespectfully.
