On the topic of unproven folk remedies, one that I like is to use soy sauce
on minor burns.
For us, it works better than cool water.  I'll take a piece of gauze and
moisten it with soy sauce and use bandage tape to hold it over the burn.
 Within an hour the pain is nearly completely gone, there is no blister
forming, and even the redness disappears on very minor burns.  If you leave
it bandaged overnight, there is almost no evidence there ever was a burn at
all!  I don't know if salt content has anything to do with it, but even
reduced sodium soy sauce (which is what I usually have in the kitchen) works
very well.
