May I please offer the viewpoint of a nonfighter about WoW?  I think I heard at one point that of the 900+ people who attended this weekend, about 200 were fighters.  By offering these points it was possible for the majority of those attending to have an impact on the outcome.  In fact, I will be as bold as to state that it's slightly unfair for a contest to be carried solely on the backs of those fighting.  Being in the SCA is a multifaceted existence.  Not all of us can represent our group in physical battle, but we can take time to help out in other ways.  Allowing for non combat points allowed the rest of us to take part in the war.

On the other hand, if one is wanting to be absolutely fair to the other team, maybe it's time to agree to have equal numbers in battle with a system that rewards the first to sign up?
