[MR] WoW Observations from a CA

First off, I had a blast at WoW this weekend! Thank you to all of you that put in such hard work to make it such a great war! It was outstanding!

Secondly, I’m just tossing out some ideas here for discussion to hopefully help us fight better against Combat Archers (CA) in the future, and to make our CA work better with the rest of the Atlantian Army. I am relatively new to CA (only 2 years) with most of my experience from fighting sword and board (over 20 years), so I hope you more experienced combat archers will jump in here with some suggestions. If we all work together we can make the Atlantian Army even better and stronger!

1. In the Woods Battle, Black Diamond seemed to have two forces facing us. On our (Sacred Stone) right flank, there was a tight group, while the left flank held more of a skirmish line. When I was shooting at the spearmen in the tight group, I had a lot (and I do mean a LOT!) more misses and blocked shots, verses shooting into the skirmish line where I was getting around one kill per 2 shoots. The spearman in the skirmish line had little to no protection during the first two-thirds of the battle and that accounted for such a high kill ratio. (Plus those sneaky SOBs that were just trying to make me use up my ammo! <grin>) By the last third of the battle, the spearmen were staying with there shield men on both flanks and I was getting a lot fewer kills.

I can’t remember if it was up here or back in my Trimaris days, but I do remember training in three man teams at one point. Two shield men to protect one spearman. It seems to me that if we can get our shield men and spearmen to train/work together more, it would greatly reduce our enemy’s effectiveness against us. Anyone have any other/better ideas to defend against Combat Archery?

2. During the Woods Battle, I had great support from the shield men in both keeping me alive and in making openings for me to make the shot! I believe that just as spearmen need to learn to work with their shield men, so do the archers. For awhile I was teamed up with a two shield men and a spearman. The four of us turned out to be a very deadly combo! (Until we were run over from behind, but that’s a rant for another post) Should we be training up four man teams like that? With my crossbow, I like to shoot from the second line. Is that something Bowmen can do, or do you all need to stay out of the press? What other ideas do you all have that can improve the effectiveness of our Combat Archers?

Those are just some observations and thoughts I had on the drive back to Maryland. For all those of you that were cursing us for shooting you, just remember, we are training to be out there to support you against our opponents! If it makes you fell any better, I think I have more welts today then I ever did fighting sword and board! <smile> I hope everyone had a great war, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing you all on the field!
