There've been changes, then.  When I was travelling out thataway (Admittedly many years ago), there were several "Western Rite" kingdoms.  The people in those kingdoma shook their heads over the "Eastern Rite" pattern, saying that it would kill some of them to be Royal for nearly a full year.

Despite that, they apparently shifted to that pattern at some point.
