At one time, heraldic cotehadies were quite popular in the SCA.
Then a lady we know, Robin Netherton, published the results of research she had done on the subject. She is a costume historian who publishes in scholarly journals.
Her research failed to find any records of what could be called heraldic surcotes. Such a garment, had it exisited, would have been a special-occasion getup and would surely have been recorded. Though it's impossible totally to prove a negative, she has concluded that heraldic cotehardies did not in fact exist in period. At the time we learned of this, Catherine had just such a garment sketched out and was preparing to begin work on it. The project was abandoned.

Subject: [MR] heraldic cotehardie
Question for those who know...
was thinking of doing a heraldic cotehardie. Is there any specific order that
he heraldry should go? For instance, if you're doing a pennon, Spike should
recede (closest to the pole) the baronial badge, which precedes the canton
adge, etc.
f the front of a cote is a quartered field, what goes where? Or does it matter?
hanks to all,
