>From _A Glossary of Terms Used in Heraldry_ by James Parker:

“Couped, or Coupy, (fr. alaisé), cut off in a straight line, as in often the
case with the heads
<http://www.heraldsnet.org/saitou/parker/Jpglossh.htm#Head> and limbs of
animals, and so distinguished form erased
It is important to say where a
head or limbs is couped; for instance, if couped close it would signify cut
off close to the head. A hand
<http://www.heraldsnet.org/saitou/parker/Jpglossh.htm#Hand> is often said
to be couped at the wrist.”

Ordinaries can also be “couped”, whereby they are “cut off” before the edge
of the field.

Example: http://op.atlantia.sca.org/awards.php (see Academie d’Espee)
