That's the trouble with English: 60 per cent of the words in the dictionary
come from Latin (often, but not always, via French or, sometimes, Spanish). 

Of course, 60 per cent of the words we commonly use in speech come from
German, usually by way of Saxon or Gaelic or Breton or....
