president instead of a king or queen??/
After we won the Revolution to get self government, we had to select a form of
government. The form we had in "the colonies" was basically parliamentary in
the middle atlantic and south, and "town meeting" in new england (direct
democracy).
There was some thought of making George Washington the King, but he refused
the position. He also refused most "high sounding" honorifics like "your
excellency", settling for "Mr. President."
And democracy and republicanism was in the air: this was only a few years
before the French revolution.
