Milady,

I seem to recall, also, hearing a story that George Washington, who was to become the first American head of state, was offered the title of king, but turned it down. He was quoted as having commented to the effect of "Haven't we had enough of kings already?" I can't swear to how true the story is, or where it comes from, but it could explain somewhat why those who drafted the Constitution chose another title.
