Yes belts were also used. I have read good arguments for them in the past based of historical written descriptions though I have no reference on that to give you. I do however have a woodcut image of St. Sebastian clearly holding up his underpants with a belt dated to 1410 -1420. The full reference for the image is in the photobucket description:
