The simplest answer is because that's the title provided by the Constitution for the person in charge.  To really get an answer other than that, you'd have to ask the guys that wrote it, but my basic understanding is the colonists had pretty much had their fill of royalty and nobility, which is why there are prohibitions in the Constitution against titles of nobility.  As to why they chose President as the title, my best guess would be that it basically means "one who presides over something", and was a relatively neutral term, whereas most other well-known titles for "person-in-charge" related to nobility, or may have been otherwise distasteful.
