You can donate whole blood every eight weeks, with each donation taking
about 45 minutes. You can also donate just platelets through a process
called apheresis, which takes about two hours.

Who can donate by apheresis?

Almost anyone who can donate blood can become an apheresis donor. Generally,
this includes someone who:

Is in good health.
Weighs at least 110 pounds.
Is at least 17 years old.
Has not taken aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs within the last three days
because these medications reduce the clotting capacity of platelets. Any
other medications may be reviewed with our nursing staff.
Has donated whole blood at least twice, but not within the last eight weeks.

Has not had a problem donating whole blood.
Can be available for the procedure. You may enjoy a movie or a book on tape
while you donate!

Types A and AB are particularly welcome as apheresis donors because most
donors choose either whole blood or apheresis as their preferred way to
donate and blood types A and AB are not as frequently in short supply. But
apheresis donations can be scheduled to accommodate continued whole blood
donations. Donors may give whole blood 28 days following an apheresis
donation.
