The reason we drive to the drive to the right is that in the coach and wagon days, drivers began sitting to the left of center to make it easier for them to drive the horses with their dominant hand. So too, here the non-driver side of the vehicle was the seat of the "shotgun" weilding protector, and everyone was expected to be armed--and greetings were handled through verbal acknowledgement. Considering it was out of place to speak to royalty unless spoke to, the whole saluting thing becomes further evident.
