Where is the break? If it is near the bowl you may never be able to get a glue to hold. Heat from the bowl may also affect it. Epoxy may hold it but you may not get a very solid bond if the area is real small.
The old clay pipes often got broken because they were shoved in pockets and packs. They were just used the way they were. Be careful when smoking a clay bowl pipe. They can get extremely hot and can blister the fingers.

No, it's not a repro pipe (I know what you are talking about, and it's not one of those). It was made by a friend who was learning pottery. The clay she used is very white and very hard. It almost feels like porcelain, but the broken end is rough. And it's glazed with a dull blackish greenish glaze.
It's quite homely, but that's why I love it. I did think about sanding it down smooth. I may do that. I imagine a dremel would work if I decided to go that route.
