Having watched the fur literally fly for the last few days I almost cringe that I am going to write this. However, I feel the need to wade in and help sort out the bodies. 
I happen to be a clergyman of a conservative but NOT fundamentalist denomination. I am also a herald. I have one thing to say on the subject. 
The last time I checked a symbol couldn't hurt you. I can even make a case for the item in question to be used by both sides of the aisle so to speak with no problems.
I hope we can as a group agree that we probably let our personal ideas about things get the better of us. People are going to believe what they want to believe both in the SCA and outside it. We can't change their minds with verbiage. Heck, we can't even screw a new head on them to make them more like us. We can and only should screw a new head on ourselves as needed. I am not asking us to get in a circle and have a group hug, but I would encourage each of us to remember that no matter what our personal credo is, I don't know of a one that promotes attacking another person for a belief. A good reminder to us all, me included.
