[MR] Tangled Yarn

Thanks for the ideas about what to do.  Here's the part I am having trouble
with:

 

Say I have 3 pieces of string/yarn that are 12 feet long.  

I tie a knot in the top, secure it to something to provide tension, and
start braiding.

The top of the string/yarn starts becoming a braid.

The 10 feet or so of string that is dangling becomes a tangled mess.

 

 

Is there some way to keep each individual string/yarn in a small skein  or
maybe rolled up on a spool and slip a section out of the skein/spool as  I
get to it?  If so how do I keep it from coming out of the skein or unrolling
before I am ready for that section?
