Friends,
I have just received LIFE IN THE MEDIEVAL CLOISTER by Julie Kerr (ISBN
9781847251619; our call # BX2470 .K47 2009). This is a very interesting
and easy to read (for a scholarly work) description of the day-to-day
life of monks and nuns in the late middle-ages. It covers the daily
routine (ever wondered what monks did at Prime?), what they wore, how
they ate, and the rules of their houses. On the latter, there is a very
amusing chapter on how those rules were too often broken, by plundering
brothers from other houses after holy relics, or by randy monks and nuns
who should have known better. It is complete with ten period
illustrations from manuscripts, though sadly in black-and-white. This is
great background material, and I am looking forward to checking this
book out and reading the whole thing.
Kind regards,
