Well, remember - this was my mother mking this suggestion and it goes back
a good 40+ years.  But if all else fails it beats having it stolen.
Personally, I don't carry a purse anywhere unless I absolutely have to. 
If I have to then the purse gets hung on my shoulder - if it's a long
strap or it gets held onto so it doesn't get hung up or placed on the
floor.  I don't carry large purses anymore.  Another hanger trick is to
hang the purse on the lower hook then hang a jacket or sweater over that.

Chagan - purseless on a shopping trip.
