im talking specifically about our appearance on the field which is covered
in corpora in two places already outlined by my inserted asterisks.

this is the stated purpose of the sca:

As a living history group, the Society provides an environment in which
members can recreate various aspects
of the culture and technology of the period, as well as doing more
traditional historical research. We sponsor
events such as ****tournaments**** and feasts ****where members dress in
clothing styles worn in the Middle Ages**** and
Renaissance, and participate in activities based on the civil and martial
skills of the period. These activities
recreate aspects of the life and culture of the landed nobility in Europe
prior to 1600 CE. The ****dress****, pastimes,
and above all the chivalric ideals of the period serve to unify our events
and activities.

and for attendance to sca events:

B. Requirements for Participants at Society events
Anyone may attend Society events *****provided he or she wears an attempt at
pre-17th century clothing,*****
conforms to the provisions in Corpora, and complies with any other
requirements (such as site fees or
waivers) which may be imposed. At business meetings and informal classes,
the requirement to wear pre-17th
century dress may be waived. All participants are expected to behave as
ladies or gentlemen.

we fighters are not exempt from the rules about our appearance and those
rules are pretty simple. unfortunately we had to go a step further and lay
it all out by creating the appearance law (which i did six years ago). one
other note, in my opinion i think its hard to "behave as a lady or
gentleman" if you refuse to follow the rules or enforce the rules. ;^)

Appearance

Your Majesty,

In your recent missive to marshals you said, "the sem is pushing for the
enforcement of corpora which specifically addresses that attendees at
society events be properly dressed." Are you speaking here of proper
protective gear for combat, or is this a broader policy governing all
members at events?

Kind regards,

confusion that some folks seem to have regarding the appearance law. i have
noticed an unacceptable trend of new fighters going to get authorized that
are not in compliance with these laws (which, by the way, are now six years
old). part of the authorization process is asking the fighter if he/she is
familiar with the rules. if he/she says yes and isnt in compliance with
these simple requirements they clearly are not, indeed, familiar with the
rules. another aspect of an authorization is an armour inspection. if the
fighter isnt in compliance with these rules then the inspection fails and
the authorization goes no further. period.

responsibility to ensure that they are in compliance with these rules, they
are prepared to engage in the authorization, and they have been properly
trained. these are all equally important. it is unfair to your new student
to not ensure that they are fully prepared to attempt an authorization and
the marshals running the authorization have no wiggle room. the earls
marshal of the kingdom and the society have a responsibility to make sure
that those within their staff comply with all rules equally. the sem is
pushing for the enforcement of corpora which specifically addresses that
attendees at society events be properly dressed. we fighters are not exempt
from that.
