It's worth noting that this varies by kingdom.  These are Atlantia's rules, but may not be applicable elsewhere.

I'm a living example. I was seneschal of Bright Hills for four years, and served as chatelaine for a couple of years after that, despite never living within the boundaries of Bright Hills. The only office that required living within the group's boundaries was baron/baroness, and Atlantia even changed that a few years back. You can serve the group with whom you play, regardless of where you live.
