You might also want to check out "Designing The New Kitchen Garden" -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0881927724?ie=UTF8&tag=suggestion-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0881927724 -- it looks like it has some relevant information on medieval vegetable gardens with advice on adapting the design to modern American gardens.
