In the worship and in the name of God, with prayers to Saint Raphael
the Archangel to guard me. I, Kevin of Thornbury, bearer of arms by
Letters Patent, Companion of the Most Puissant Order of the Kraken,
and Companion Emeritus of the Loyal Company of Sergeants of Saint
Aiden send forth this challenge. Upon the 24th of October, the feast
day of the blessed archangel, he who shines down upon all who travel,
I will welcome all those who love the culture of deeds to meet me in
arms as I uphold the honor, virtue and beauty of the fairest of all
ladies in all lands, the ruler of my heart and the nurturer of my
heir, Maestra Giuliana Salviati, my wife. Upon the fields of the
Barony of Ponte Alto, between us shall we accomplish deeds of arms
before this gentle lily and her ladies of the gallery, and I ask her
to find favor on these articles here signed.
Article the first, that each combatant must provide for that same self
a Consort, and bear a token of the favor of the one whose honor is to
be upheld.
Article the second, that we between us all shall be armed in noble
fashion, bearing a device upon body and shield by which we may be
known upon the field.
Article the third, that each venan must provide for that same self a
herald and a banner or pennon that the worthiness of the venan and the
virtue of the consort may be known by all who attend. Each combatant
must answer the call of the King of Arms to the Grand Procession, with
their banners or pennons, heralds and attendants, and of greatest
import, the consort that they represent to be presented to the Knight
of Honor and to the lily of Florence, Maestra Giuliana. Each combatant
shall swear their adherence to the rules of the tournament there
spoken.
Article the fourth, that I, Kevin of Thornbury, will be attended by
four worthy men who will provide me succor upon the field, who have
the especial trust and favor of Maestra Giuliana in upholding her
honor.
Article the fifth, that we should essay combat a plaisance upon the
open field, both in single combat and in melee between the tenans and
venans.
Article the sixth, that I, Kevin of Thornbury, will provide two
bucklers of equal worth, two pollaxes of equal worth and two short
spears of equal worth, that my opponent shall choose of the same upon
the appointed time for individual challenges.
Upon conclusion of the challenges, the King of Arms will close the
Tournament of the Lily, affording all due honor and glory to the deeds
witnessed that day.
Done by my hand, on this the sixth day of January xliii, on the feast
of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
