Haggadah]<http://links.levenger.com/r/SSO6LH/6AZ6/2BK7D/OFQ2/YFE3/K9/h>Dear
Levenger Customer,
Sometime in the fourteenth century, the prayer book that would become known
as the Sarajevo Haggadah was used for the first time at a family’s Seder in
Spain. This Haggadah was unlike any other—a richly embellished, illuminated
manuscript.
Even so, it was an object not simply to behold but to be held in family
members’ hands as they recited the prayers and passed the wine. We know that
by the marks on the pages where hands have turned them, and by the drops of
spilled wine that color some of the illuminations.
Levenger is offering the first complete, authorized facsimile of the
Sarajevo Haggadah in America. Hold it in your hands and know that it is a
treasure to behold.
*The journey*
Its story goes far beyond the prayers it contains.
The Sarajevo Haggadah survived the Spanish Inquisition and the burning of
books by Rome—a Catholic priest saved it. It was smuggled out of the museum
in Sarajevo during World War II by an Islamic scholar, literally under the
nose of a Nazi officer, and hidden away for safekeeping in a mosque in the
mountains.
The museum once again became the repository for the Haggadah after the war.
During the bombings in Sarajevo in the 1990s, by what many call a miracle,
it survived once again.

Haggadah]<http://links.levenger.com/r/SSO6LH/6AZ6/2BK7D/OFQ2/6H38/K9/h>Today
the original is still housed in the Sarajevo Museum, where it is considered
a world treasure. It is so rare as to be appraised at $700 million. Only a
few are allowed access to it.
*The gift*
This numbered facsimile, which only Levenger is permitted to sell, is the
first complete, authorized American edition, created with the authority of
the National Museum, Sarajevo. It is the closest most of us will ever come
to holding this remarkable history in our hands.
It is both humbling and exhilarating to hold this weighty artifact,
reproduced to the original’s exact dimensions, enhanced with our rich linen
cover and protective slipcase.
It might well be a book you consider buying for Passover this year. Or it
may be a gift you choose for a bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah, a wedding or an
anniversary, a birthday. What a meaningful gift to present to a temple or
church.
Or it just may be a book you decide to own because its extraordinary story
is one not only of survival but of faith, and a story that embraces all
faiths.
And for any lover of extraordinary books, what a treasure!
*The experience*
Even though I don’t read Hebrew, I have been able to experience this book,
aided greatly by the companion book that accompanies our edition.
The two essays in the companion bring both the past and present of the
Sarajevo Haggadah into vivid and memorable focus. One essay is by Geraldine
Brooks, the Pulitzer Prize-wining author of People of the Book, her
bestselling novel based on the Haggadah’s journey. The other is by the
eminent scholar Cecil Roth, the former editor of Encyclopedia Judaica.
*The legacy*
Sometime in the twenty-first century, the pundits tell us, printed books may
become history. Knowledge, after all, can be virtually gained, so what need
have we of paper?
The pages of the Sarajevo Haggadah remind us of how paper books serve as
testament to a history we should never lose. Owning its facsimile is,
indeed, a gift.
*Click here* <http://links.levenger.com/r/SSO6LH/6AZ6/2BK7D/OFQ2/YFEU/K9/h>for
more details on our numbered edition.
Our *Sarajevo Haggadah* is limited to just 2,249 numbered copies, and most
of them have already been sold. We won’t be reprinting. When the remaining
copies are gone, this opportunity will be, too.
I urge you not to miss out. This is a book to be treasured and passed down,
from one loving hand to the next.
Best wishes,
