There's some Hindu fundies / fanatics in India now, trying to push for
penalties levied on those who convert from Hinduism to Islam or
Christianity. Seems a lot of their Christians and Muslims are former
lower-caste folks. They figured out that the most expeditious way to
not be lower-caste Hindu, is to not be a Hindu.
