Greetings!
A good woodworking store is a major resource for you.
In particular, I can recommend Woodcraft. www.woodcraft.com.
I know there is a store in Richmond, VA, Charlotte and Raleigh, NC. They
have all the tools you need (including special gloves that will keep you
from cutting your hand!!!) plus how-to books and videos. They typically
offer inexpensive classes, too.
Many good woodworking stores will be able to hook you up with people who
already do woodcarving, if you ask them.
If you need to skimp on the cost of your tools, Harbour Freight has cheaper
(in price and often in quality) tools. There is a factory outlet by Pedros
on the NC/SC border, and there is also a store in Fayetteville, NC. Bound
to be others around, too. You won't be likely to find anyone there who
actually knows something about what you want to do with the tools, though.
Mailorder options include Highland Hardware in Atlanta, GA. They have a
website also. Very knowledgeable and helpful folks, who can talk you thru
what you need to get on the phone or via email.
Best of luck,
Andras Salamandra
