Another reason for consulting a vet is that veterinary formulations are often
MUCH cheaper than human formulations. And if insulin is required, you will
need it for the rest of the animal's life.

If you do often find yourself in the position of having to diagnose or treat
an animal, get a copy of the Merck Veterinary Manual. Among other things, some
common foods and medications are poisonous to other species.

I had to think long and hard before posting this, but recent cases of mine

where pets have been accidentally killed by owner promoted me.

FYI for anyone thinking of providing veterinary medical care to their own
 pets without consulting a veterinarian.

This is a bad idea! A dog is not a furry human. A cat is not a small dog.
A rabbit is not a long eared cat. They all have very different physiology
and drugs used in humans may not work the same in your pet. In fact, they may

kill your pet! I have seen a long list of these cases and had a few of them

die. The worst offenders are human doctors and nurses. Children's doses of

human drugs do not translate to a dose for a pet of the same size.

Practicing veterinary medicine on your pet is not illegal unless you cause

them harm or pain then it is considered abuse. Animal control will charge you

if they discover the offense. Diagnosing/treating someone else's pet,
sharing your prescribed veterinary medicine, using your own prescribed human

medicine, are all practicing veterinarian medicine without a licence and it
is
illegal. The courts are taking animal abuse and practicing medicine without a

 licence much more seriously.

Bite the bullet and see a licensed veterinarian. Surprisingly they actually

know what the normal range of blood glucose for a dog, what kind of insulin

to give (there are many kinds of insulin), and how much insulin should be
given. Your pet will thank you and live longer.

If money for proper veterinary care is an issue there are prorated clinics

in many major cities. If you can't afford prorated veterinary are you should

consider if you can really afford a pet. Nationally veterinarian give away

more hours than any other professional for charity work and will work with

you. When all is said and done remember that pet ownership, unlike
parenthood,
 is a luxury/privlige.

sorry about the off topic post.

so, ive been a type 1 diabetic for 21 years. we have an 11 year old dog
(well, mine for the last year) that is a little lethargic, drinks lots of
water, has some skin issues. she also has a dry mouth and doesnt gain
weight. well, being a diabetic i was thinking about whether this was an age

thing or, perhaps, something i can relate to (back before i gained total
control over my diabetes many many years ago). a dogs bgl is between 60 and

120 mg/dl. so i tested lou's sugar tonight (using a lip prick) and the
first reading was 515, the second was 525. just to be sure i tested two of

our other dogs using my glucometer, the first one was 65 and the second was

 52. so, i think i have a control (x2) and a test.

if anyone is currently treating a type 1 diabetic dog i would really
 appreciate an email.

 regards
