>From _An Heraldic Alphabet_ by J.P. Brooke-Little:

 

"Crescent - A half-moon with the horns pointing upwards.  If the horns point
to the dexter it is an 'increscent', if to the sinister, a 'decrescent, and
if to the base, 'a crescent reversed'.  (In cadency) It is the mark of a
second son."

Now, if the crescents looked like "C"s, they'd be called decrescents.  If
they faced the opposite direction, increscents.  

 

Waxing = INcrescent (like _in_creasing)

Waning = DEcrescent (like _de_creasing)
