I can confirm using 40"ish  side poles does cut your footprint. Roman 
Wall Tent    Rectangle    White Canvas    Size 10 X 12    Footprint with 
ropes    16 X 30    Total SQ FT 480.0   Pennsic SQFT  351.0 . Our barony 
has a tent matrix listing all known tents with sizes, sq footage etc. 
Without side poles one must pull farther out to line up with the roof 
line, hence increasing footprint substantially. Not an issue where land 
is not a problem, but in smaller venues it is wise to use side poles. I 
am experimenting with just corner poles and omitting the other 6 side 
poles (5 per side).
