[MR] Assassins vs. Pirates....

the problem with citing folks like sir francis and then using the way
englands enemies viewed him as some kind of justification for anyone to call
themselves a pirate fails to take into account that in the sca we have no
enemy. francis served under his master, elizabeth I in her navy and
answered to her law. these are not things true pirates do/did. he was a
knight for his service as a sea captain in elizabeths navy and he attacked
the spanish armada so of course they called him all sorts of demeaning
names. the sca doesnt have that spain to label her people as scoundrels. he
might be a perfect example of a knight that served in the navy, but not as a
knight who claimed to be a pirate (which, of course, he never did).

Subject: [MR] Assassins vs. Pirates....

A'right I knew that eventually, someone was going to drag those of us who
play Nautical Personas into this.....

Let's face it, both classes of people have been around as long as man
has.... The Greeks and Romans dealt with piracy, and assassinations. The
Vikings were essentially pirates, for cryin out loud!

However, as was pointed out, no member of either class would be found
running around in polite Society in their time periods announcing what they
did. Doing so would most likely get them killed VERY quickly....

Anyone who knows me, know that I never claim Pirate. When asked, my reply
is always, "I am not a Pirate, I am a Pre-emptive Salvage Specialist".....
Does that make me less a productive member of this organization? No, it
doesn't..... If it did, I would not be allowed to act as Seneschal for my
Barony, Autocrat events, and certainly, if I was such a despicable person,
Baroness Morwenna would never have allowed my being warranted as a
Chirurgeon....

Remember, this is a game, and it's supposed to be for fun.... If I want to
play a Nautical persona, and it's not affecting anyone else's fun, then why
not? Because some people who used to have fun are now sticks in the mud and
think that "Pirates aren't Period", or "Pirates aren't noble"????

Sir Francis Drake would be a perfect example, IN PERIOD.... A Knight to the
English, and a Pirate to the Spanish.

Look folks, I am not trying to stir the pot anymore, but this needed to be
said.... I agree with the general vibe, that assassins running around
dressed as Ninjas don't need be here, as that isn't what we do. If someone
wants to run around playing a Japanese noble, and hides behind that persona
playing assassin, then so be it. As long as it's not taken too far, and
that everyone involved knows where the limits are. If the person playing
such is truly an honorable person (Because we all know there are people in
ANY group that are not as good as they seem), then they will play the role
the way it would have historically been played....

Just please, remember what this organization was like when you first
started... And as I was taught many years ago, when I first started
playing... "If you treat newcomers better than you were treated when you
began, you improve the Society as a whole."

Isn't that what we are all after in the first place?

Just me two doubloons on the table.....

 Until the next,
Yours in service,
