For those of you who have cats, permethrin is extremely toxic to them (it is the ingredient used in K9 Advantix). If this is something you want to consider using, keep in mind that special care will have to be taken in storing clothing, tents & other articles on which it is used. Especially if your cats are like mine, and not only stick their noses in everything but have to taste it too.

They are not reliably repelled by DEET, the insect repellent that works on most other pests. However, there is an effective clothing treatment.  Permethrin spray is an effective treatment that will last through several washings.
