I love the idea, simple, easy, straight to the point...

but...

Instead of just one site...  maybe we could find about ten sites
around the kingdom, and assign a number one through ten to each site,
and roll a ten sided dice 12 times, and then use the odd rolls to
determine the next 6 locations for crown...  then, we could use a deck
of cards, and deal them out to predetermined champions for each
barony... then, those champions could play a vicious game of war, 6
times (winners stepping out of concurrent rounds), with the winners of
each round playing host to the next six crown tourneys.

That's how I'd do it.

This is the method we use in Ansteorra. With a slight modification in
concern to the involvement of our Champions. Instead of War we utilize
full contact slap-jack. It works pretty well and is quite an
entertaining bear pit.
ohh... but when I think of the beautiful period furniture that has
been demolished over the decades it 'bout makes me wanna cry...
