Begging the understanding of Your Majesties and the more experienced Peers
and members of the realm, I have an idea. I offer it up to be kicked
around, torn apart, and generally discussed to death by any who wish to do
so. Being relatively new to all things SCA, this may even be an old idea to
be dismissed right away. I'm ok with that too.

A single location does put the fringe of the Kingdom in a guaranteed bind.
A single location does make certain aspects more easily planned around, but
it still causes issues. A solution that I have seen work in another
organization is to establish a rotating schedule. Dividing the Kingdom into
roughly three sections, each section (upper, middle, or lower or however it
is more appropriate) is responsible for an event. Event one is held in the
south, event two is held centrally, event three is held in a northern
location, event four is back at a southern location and so on. It makes the
planning for merchants and fringe groups easier as they know that every x
months they will have a nearby event. The number of groups needing to come
up with a bid is also reduced, which may make it easier for smaller groups
to work together in producing a nicer event; it also takes the burden of
bidding that event off the shoulders of those out of the designated area. A
set of three sites could be approved for each region, allowing discussions
for the contracting benefits suggested in the single location idea as well
as site consistencies. (If one venue is willing to work with us I would
think we could find two others willing to do a similar thing.)

Obviously this is a rough idea and one that would need significant tweaking
in order to work. I offer it as a starting point and an idea only, not a
final solution.

Yours,

Dorothea
