Sounds like it may be time to dust off some of the courtesy classes I used
to teach at University.  Whether it is a cloven fruit or a "can I carry that
for you?" offer, one of the core concepts is that an act is only courteous
if it can be politely declined.

Not to mention proper ways to greet someone and even "kiss" their hand
without actually touching the hand with your lips.
