That might have been a bit more for pain relief than covering any odor. Clove (oil specifically) is an analgesic and antiseptic. The oil is still used in modern dentistry to treat toothaches and dry socket.
I don't miss the cloved fruit game so much as what it represented - a younger, more dynamic element of our culture. We all pretty much got old and crotchety.
